Don’t knock the hustle…

One day an old friend and I were doing some catching up. Talking laughing like we use to do back in the day. And I took notice to the fact that he always found a place to squeeze in conversation pertaining to working out or the gym… Not that I should go or that I need to go but about how much he loved it.. Hell after awhile he just stopped talking about whatever it was we were talking about and started to tell me that working out and getting bigger is all he thought about. It’s what he loved to do… He wanted to be this big ass strong man… I remember thinking at first “How is that going to make this dude any money? He tripping” and in that same minute I corrected my thought and said to myself “Don’t knock his hustle”…

I think that my friend was SO sincere about what it is he wanted to do. And he’s so brave for telling me because that’s a uncommon dream. People just don’t right out tell you their uncommon dream because some of us aren’t condition to dream let alone do it uncommonly! Most of our parents taught us to go to school get an education graduate from college so on and so forth.. I know for a fact dreaming wasn’t apart of my up bringing.. My mom wasn’t a dreamer she dealt in real life things… I remember telling her I wanted to be a singer, she shot me down.. She might as well had been the mother off of Sister Act Two “Singing doesn’t not put food on the table, singing does not pay the bills, singing is no guarantee to a future, even if you have got talent!” That’s not what she said but that’s surely what I heard in my head…

I’ve come to the conclusion that if there’s something you think about daily. Something you find yourself preparing for right now. Rather its being a doctor or it is being in the music industry, Do Not quit!… Don’t let people who have never even ever done it tell you that your way is wrong.. If you have envisioned yourself doing it trust God to get you too it because he will…

Stop looking at people sideways when they tell you what they want to do just because you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel… They do and you wouldn’t want numerous people telling you that what you want is bull shit… Don’t tell people the way that they are building their success is wrong or stupid because yours might not make sense to them either…

The next time we talk be it via email, twitter, comments, etc…Ask me what I want to do with my life… Don’t knock the hustle…

Mind your damn business: Social Networking

I remember being a young girl with a Blackplanet page… To me that was a way to talk to my friends without my mom picking up the phone saying “Jordyn I need to use the phone!” Or without my granny totally disconnecting the phone from the phone jack at 8pm because in her house that was just too late to be talking on the phone and keep her line busy. (my granny didn’t and still doesn’t have call waiting) ….. Then came MySpace. That was the place where you’d get a quick message for taking someone out of your top 8. The place you played your favorite song on you page and let people come see some of the cool post and picture you put up… That’s where I displayed my relationship status to my first real boyfriend…

Facebook was suppose to be for college students at first and then it opened up for anybody! That’s when social media became more personal.. You told people what you were doing you posted pictures of where you were at. Then twitter breakthrough came about and it got so real for us social media freaks…

But social media isn’t really that fun anymore… You got people who post all of their business on these sites…Lets not get into the ridiculous spam -_- ….

Now let me explain this key fact… Once you put it on the Internet (Social Network) it is no longer just your business. It’s all of your friends and followers business as well. So if you and yo baby daddy beefing and y’all going back and forth via subliminal Facebook Statuses and Tweets you’ve welcomed the world in your life…. Or if you and your boy fell out over a chick and y’all decided to argue via twitter and Instagram post congratulations you’ve just opened it up for discussion… It’s the dumbest thing you can say when you do things like that and then say “People need to mind their own business”… They are minding their business you posted something in their network, what’s yours is theirs and what’s theirs is yours if they do the same… You have to “Mind your business” by keeping it private and doing your part to keep it off of social media…

Make sense?…. Mind your damn business then…

Judge us by the fruit we bare…

Matthew 7:16-20 ESV
[16] You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? [17] So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. [18] A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. [19] Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. [20] Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

So lets get right into this….

Lawrence was the good guy, one woman man. And Tay he was the complete opposite he had so many women you’d think he was human trafficking or something… Lawrence met Lorena through one of Tays hoochies…. He saw something in her that he’d never seen in anyone else. The night they met she was continuously warning her girl against Tay. None of her warning worked out though… Lawrence was use to seeing the friends of Tays girls being sucked in.. However Lorena was different. Lorena was Lawrence’s type.. They dated for six months. No sex at all and then the day came and he made her feel like she was a Queen.. Lorena still had her issues with Lawrence’s friendship with Tay… Tay was still very much about that life.. And Lawrence and him were still bestfriends…

One night after Lorena and Lawrence got into an argument Lawrence made the biggest mistake of his life by seeking advice from Tay… Who gave Lawrence an address to met him and come to find out it was a gentlemens club… Lawrence was so mad he didn’t even care, he needed to talk.. Lawrence didnt usually talk to Tay about his relationship problems but his married friend was with his wife so Tay was his only option… Naked and half dressed women everywhere, Tay spotted Lawrence and gestured for him to come over to his booth.. The two began drinking and talking. Tay invited this lady over to the booth. And she was badddddd like a kid in time out! .. “Give my mans a private dance B, he needs an escape” Tay said… Lawrence went to the room with her and she danced alright, she danced her way right into his pants and right on top of his manhood… Before Lawrence knew it he’d had sex with someone other than Lorena…

The next day when Lawrence woke up at home up next to Lorena he felt like CRAP.. Literally had a hangover and a conscious nagging at him.. He stumbled out of bed for a Advil. He checked his phone and Tay called and texted multiple times.. The text messages all read “WHATEVER YOU DO DON’T TELL LORENA!”… But Lawrence was different he didn’t want to cheat he just had too many emotions mixed with too much alcohol… He told her…. Lorena was devastated but then again she felt like it was soon to happen anyway because he was with Tay lastnight….. She totally disregarded the fact that Lawrence had NEVER done anything like this..

She decided it was over, She decided she could not deal with cheating. “Lawrence I can’t do this, I didn’t fall in love with a cheater”.. the first thing Lawrence said to her was “You are right you didnt fall in love with a cheater… Lorena a cheater I am NOT!…I understand you’re upset, but for the time we been together I waited til you were ready to have sex and through that time I didn’t cheat, when we are out together I don’t even look at women, you have the passcode to my phone as well as permission to use it whenever you’d like, and lastly I was honest about this situation but you treat me like I bared bad fruit throughout our relationship? One bad thing cancels out all my good?… Have a great life Lorena”…

*** In this story Lawrence was the good tree and Tay was the bad tree… We learned in the scripture good trees bare good fruit and bad trees bare bad fruit… Lorena didnt recognize Lawrence as the good tree she couldn’t look pass her emotions and understand the mistake…. My point is the repeated offenses explain who you are, it’s the fruit you bare. Not the one thing you do that displeases people… Think about that the next time you decide to judge somebody.. Look at the actions before hand and if it doesn’t line up neither does your judgement***

Make it plain

Habakkuk 2:2-3 ESV
[2] And the LORD answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. [3] For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end-it will not lie.If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.

There’s so much I’d like to do. So much I am capable of I believe I have found my nitch, my purpose, the thing I do best. For years I’ve thought that my purpose was singing. I love to sing I love music! But for as long as I could remember I could write,it started with poems. Me and my bestfriend in middle school had a whole notebook full of poems we wrote together and separate. One day we were in the library at school and left it there. When we thought about it we ran to the library to get it and it was GONE… So crushed I felt like some of my best work was in there…. **Fast forward til now** theres so much I want to do and I will do before this year is over.

The scripture above says to “write the vision make it plain” I’ve been writing out my vision and brainstorming for greatness.. It goes on to say “If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay”.. It warns me that with writing this vison down it will come but I will have to be patient and wait on him. Right before that it says “For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end-it will not lie” that says that at the right time the vision will be put on display for everyone to see or take part in and the very things I desire will be so! That alone makes me excited for the things I want to and am going to do…

If you have a dream or a vision for something to take place, take it seriously. Write it down as you see it in full detail so that if it is so the next person can bring out the vision as you’d want them to. Take it to The Lord in a faithful prayer.. And watch they way he lines you up with the right people, places you in the the right place, shows you available at the right time all for your purpose to be showcased to the world…

Black History

As child I remember when “Black History Month” rolled around and we learned about legends like Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Malcom X, and Harriet Tubman just to name a few. We’d go to school and learn about our heritage for a month with a few highlighted key players.

We would watch old movies that showed us how we came from being King and Queens to slaves who worked harder than hard just to make it.. We saw how we moved on up to being the help taking in domestic jobs such as a maid or a butler…

Lets not forget the group of evil ass white people who hated us though.. The KKK (Klu Klux Klan). These Caucasian people would burn crosses in front if our homes, hang us from trees, and down right treat us as African American people as scum… Made it so hard for us to prosper in life…

That was back in the day. But today the KKK is still alive and well. And unfortunately there are AFRICAN AMERICAN members as well… That’s right black people have joined the Klan… But there is a difference the Caucasians where this white ghost like suits… But the African Americans were True religion jeans and Michael Jordan tennis shoes.. Walking around mad at the world eliminating each other as well as man kind alone… Coming through like a thief in the night robbing their own of their mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, daughters, and sons… All over materialistic bullshit or over respect that never was deserved… Focusing their time and energy on how to steal everything the Jones’s have in 10 mins or less instead of focusing on something that will bring them financial stability and future success….

Why don’t we like ourselves?… We teach our children the meaning of turn up instead of “pay attention”… And by the time they are 15 they are causing all the neighbors to look at you differently seeing as all their things are coming up missing and yours is still in tact… We blame everything on the man.. But in reality we are the ones making it harder on ourselves! We’ve got to do better… We have to go back to being that praying, loving “it takes a village to raise a child” way so that the future for our children and ourselves will be much brighter and hold much more promise…

Understand that if we don’t we are doing exactly what they who are against us (African Americans) want us to do.. Eliminating ourselves.. My prayer is that we pay attention more and come together with other African Americans as well as other races to provide a better place in the land of the living…

Below I am attaching a letter that was floating around not too long ago to all “Gang members”:

Supporting black/urban businesses… Why not?

This blog will ruffle some feathers… However let me explain I don’t do things to piss anyone off I do them to shine a light on something they don’t see…

A few weeks ago, a woman attended Flint Southwestern Academy (High school) posted a small rant on Instagram talking about how black people need to put money back into the black community… You know how we do not support each other?.. (And I agree, I support a lot of people with music or clothing lines or even new and coming hair stylist…) she went on to say that we will give our money to other outlets such as Koreans or Asians and also the white man instead of supporting a hard working black person with a dream… The black community would rather hate and take their money elsewhere instead of help promote and support… And that is what I’ve seen I’m sure it’s what other people have seen as well…

I brought up this post to my favorite people and they brought up two amazing points stating; “They aren’t being supported because they charge too much”… Some may give an opposing view saying that they are covering costs and the statement is simply untrue. but i pose this argument.. Why should someone buy a screen printed t-shirt from you for $20 when they can go to Tjmaxx and get a well known brand for a fraction of that price?.. Better yet why buy a $40 sweat shirt when consumers can go to the mall and secure a name brand for ten dollars cheaper?.. Is the answer: Because you’re black and They’re black also?… Is that a good enough reason to part with the extra hard earned doe? Absolutely NOT…

With 99% of the wealth distributed to the top 1% of Americans, a new outfit comes with a cost greater than the price tag of a simple shirt. The cost of (possible) opportunity often outweighs the purchase at hand leaving most to bargain shop & “ball out” on sales day. Most aren’t willing to go broke paying for somebody else’s dream mainly because it takes away from opportunities that would be open if they hadn’t showed their unwavering support.. For example I buy 1 prettygirls rock! T-shirts from a local black vendor. The shirt costs me $20 of the $60 I have. Now I’m left with $40, 1/3rd of what I began with and it’s still only a “T-shirt” and the opportunities that I once had with $60 have changed to $40 opportunities.

The secondly it seems as though unfortunately black people with dreams refuse to lose a bit to win a lot .. A wise man once told me “In business you have to give up some ass to get some ass”… That means you’re going to have to give something away for free in order to even get people to look at your skill or product and want to invest… You may be able to do hair better than any licensed professional owning a salon but if you at the crib curling, braiding, twisting and perming you can’t charge people Salon prices.. You have to be willing to cut those prices in half literally to build your clientele.. You need those people more then they need you, that skill will be your bread and butter or is.. And there’s hair stylist and hair care specialist EVERYWHERE.. Or as a designer you have to be willing to give tshirts for a reasonable price.. As an artist you have to give music for free.. Internet or hard copy!… The grind is just that a struggle!..

The bible even speaks of having to suffer through before things change for the complete better.. Think about it Jesus was something great! Something amazing that man had to die and raise back up from the dead to even be acknowledged and yet and still some still don’t acknowledge his awesomeness… Don’t start acting stupid I’m not saying you gotta die to get recognition I’m saying you have to make sacrifices…

There will always be haters be it black, white, Asian, yellow whatever! They are simply here to make you work harder… Don’t use them as an excuse to why you’re business isn’t lucrative at the moment… Everybody ain’t suppose to believe in you as long as you do and God is in what you’re doing you will find more success that you can imagine..

*** I wrote this to explain the other sides argument… I will NEVER stop supporting people with dreams as long as Im living..*** Much Love <3

Olivia Browns Freshmen ten… The controversy… And Kendrick Lamar’s verse

Last night was an amazing night for music on both the main stream side as well as the home town end for people in Flint,Mi…..

First mainstream did y’all hear Kendrick Lamar’s verse on Big Sean’s “No I.d”? I wouldn’t call it beef I’d call it a fair warning as to what it is he’s trying to do with his career!… With a verse like that I’m wondering if anyone remember to wait for Jay Electronica verse… I sure did not..

Last night Flint,Mi free lance writer Olivia Brown changed the game by releasing her Freshmen class 10 list of hip hop artist. The list consist of artist like: Justin Daye, Brandon Bars, Blinkease, Taztro, Tiera Santoya, Sensational Roc, Jus Ra, July DopeShow, Anthony Stoner, and last but definitely NOT least Yung Domino ( My personal favorite)… These are ten of Flints up and coming artist that are absolutely dope or on their way to being something amazing… Olivia released the list yesterday building a major buzz for herself. The city was definitely talking and if they say they weren’t then they lying!… She did the work in picking who she felt was on their way to star quality, they had a photo shoot, and there will also be music released next Monday (www.oliviabrownsdopeshow.com is where it will be posted). Her work on the freshmen ten is dope it is something that simply hasn’t been done before. I applaud her and I can’t wait to hear the music and see the photos from the shoot with Flints great photographer Donnell Carr…

That buzz she created started another list which was posted on Instagram shortly after her piece on her blog was dropped. Flints DJ Substance made a second list of those who he felt where more fit for the freshmen ten.. His list consisted of artist such as: Toni Valli, Tiera Santoya, King Cashes, Jhyce, Messo & Pistol Bricks, Justin Daye, Yae, Sequal, Vonte Grayy, and LMCOB… Though DJ Substance is well known and pretty well respected around here a few ppl including BetterRaps own Kareem Kelly felt like he was out of order… But Substance said to Kareem Kelly on twitter “I felt like her list was garbage” … To each it’s own..

Because this is my blog I’m going to give my opinion… Here it goes… Olivia did it first and she did that thang! First one to do it is an original the rest are just copies… Her list was very accurate. She thought of the idea worked on it made it happen the fact that Substance felt the need to copy her work makes hers even better… It’s always been said imitation is the highest form of flattery.. Olivia’s list isn’t just a list there’s a story behind it, there will be music released next Monday as well as photos… Substances just took five minutes and made a list there was nothing behind that but taking someone else’s work changing a few names and put his stamp on it… No disrespect to him we’ve all seen his work and the people he has worked with through out the city however real is real…

That’s all folks… Be on the look out for the music and photos from Olivia Browns Freshmen class ten! And if you don’t know these artist look them up give them a listen SUPPORT our city…
